Monochrome Monday: Grand Central Terminal

The Monochrome Monday #momo challenge starts with the famous and timeless Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

Intrigued at how Monochrome Monday (aka MoMo and #momo) started, I did a little digging online and discovered that this challenge was started by co-founder Julia Revitt of the community-based site VERO in 2018.

Monochrome Monday celebrated its 5th year running in May of this year. If you are interested, read the full and intriguing reason why Julia started #momo.

Hailing from the film camera era, I still use the term black and white in photography, although in recent times, “monochrome” is more widely, used. Do you prefer monochrome or colour? Why?

Beautiful 😻 reminds me of Los Angeles train station here

Thank you da-Al. Hope all is well with you. 🙂

New York has such beautiful vibes

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

It certainly does and I’ve visited a couple of times now but would still love to go back.
Popped over to your site to find out your name and also to leave a comment but don’t think you have comments turned on.
      Appreciate you leaving a comment.

      1. Expedition Addict Avatar

No worries! Will have to check my comments settings later haha

      2. Image Earth Travel Avatar

        Sure, no problem.

  3. equinoxio21 Avatar

And I don’t know why the likes take ages to load… Weird. (Hopefully my comments will reach you)

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Yeah, I asked the support gurus and they said it’s something to do with needing to clear the browser/cache.

      1. equinoxio21 Avatar

And how on earth does one do that? I used to do it almost once a week, with Windows. But I haven’t got a clue on Mac. I’ve tried to look it up. There’s a lot of “other” files, and I still haven’t found a way to get rid of them. In worst cases, I’ve backed up my files and re-formatted the Mac…🙄

      2. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Ha, ha, don’t you just love technology! You don’t need to reformat your MAC – that’s major. It’s been a while since I used a MAC but this may help:
        1. In the Safari app on your Mac, choose History > Clear History, then click the pop-up menu.
        2. Choose how far back you want your browsing history cleared.

      3. equinoxio21 Avatar

You’re right. I do that from time to time, the problem are subscriptions… you have to put the password back in…
History is not too bad. Particularly on the IPAD. Easy to erase. I was referering to the “others” files. Not image, not doc, not video. Just others which are really the odd “caché” files. A major bore.

      4. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Ah right, I really don’t remember how to do that on a MAC but doesn’t clearing “everything” in the browser do just that?
I’ve disabled an option in the LiteSpeed plugin so not sure if the Likes are loading now. Let me know if you get the chance.

      5. equinoxio21 Avatar

I have cleared the browsers before on Ipad, but the “others” files remain. They’re really “caché” of files one opens, closes, but a “shadow” remains. And eats up space… Just annoying.
I will tell you gladly whether the Likes load or not…

      6. Image Earth Travel Avatar

It’s a real pain but think it’s because of the LiteSpeed Cache plugin I’ve installed and the plugin’s support is suggesting setting options to remove. The likes seems to load on my laptop but not on a couple of mobile devices.

      7. equinoxio21 Avatar

I’ll check it when I get to my mail. Have the grandkids home today, since they’re on holiday . They can be a handful. Though lovely…

      8. Image Earth Travel Avatar

No hurry and no pressure. 😉
Enjoy the grandkids. Think I mentioned I met my 2 Great nephews for the first time in February this year before I left Australia. Couldn’t visit due to COVID and work commitments. They are so gorgeous! The eldest just turned 3 and has a globe, which my niece is teaching him where I’m travelling in the world – it’s so cool and hopefully will instil the travel bug early.

      9. equinoxio21 Avatar

Great nephews? OMG. Gorgeous I imagine… And following you around the globe… How sweet.

      10. Image Earth Travel Avatar

        Yes, I’m that old! 😉
It’s pretty cool although my niece says he’s struggling a bit, but maybe I’m travelling too fast for him to keep up, ha, ha.

      11. equinoxio21 Avatar

        Haha. 60-70 countries and change?

      12. Image Earth Travel Avatar

        Some change.

      13. equinoxio21 Avatar

Oops. More than 70? (I am defeated)

      14. Image Earth Travel Avatar

I don’t think so, it’s between 60-70 but I haven’t tallied up lately and this year has been full-on.
        I think you’ve seen more than I have…so far. 😉

      15. equinoxio21 Avatar

Yes, you’ve picked up speed and space. No, I’m at 39-40 countries. (YOU made me tally it, LOL). But, but. I only count countries where I’ve lived or travelled to, and stayed at least a few days. I don’t count stop-overs. e.g. I’ve had stop-overs in Panama, or Peru, or Greece, but I don’t count them…

      16. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Ha, ha, I made you count the countries! That’s too funny. 🙂
Ah, so I need to remove Hong Kong as I’ve stopped over for half a day transfer and Iceland was a stopover of 6 hours, so both don’t count.

      17. equinoxio21 Avatar

        Haha! yes, you did.
Keep them. I just put those “rules” because I had made a lot of stopovers as a child when air transport was slow. And TBH, I am still tempted to put China because I did two stopovers in Canton… Hmmm.

      18. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Two stop-overs? Surely that means you’ve been there, ha, ha!
I think my Beijing 9-day birthday surprise counts. 😉

      19. equinoxio21 Avatar

Beijing counts. And that’s a big spot on the map… 😉 I think I remember that post. Checking.

      20. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Ha, ha, 9 days is a short time for my type of travel but it was a surprise birthday present while we were working so needs must. 😉

      21. equinoxio21 Avatar

I know you spend more time in each place. But 9 days count…

      22. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Cool, I’ve clocked that one then with your permission, ha, ha … 😉

      23. equinoxio21 Avatar

        haha!

      24. equinoxio21 Avatar

Yes I did… (So you think I should count China?) 😉
        No. I shall stand firm…

      25. Image Earth Travel Avatar

        Of course! 😉

      26. equinoxio21 Avatar

I’ll try to think checking on my phone too…

      27. Image Earth Travel Avatar

        Thanks, but I don’t think it’s fixed yet. 🙁

      28. equinoxio21 Avatar

As for the likes, your post normally comes into my mail on Monday. So I should be able to tell you soon.

      29. Image Earth Travel Avatar

I remember you mentioned that – no pressure. 😉

      30. equinoxio21 Avatar

PS. But I’ll find a way. Some day…😉

      31. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Ha, ha, you probably have a zillion old files clogging up your MAC!

Arrived in Lviv last night after 9.5 hours of door-to-door travel (so, not so bad) to get to the apartment.
Currently sitting with my laptop on the toilet in the bathroom as the Alert app on the phone went off for a potential cruise missile. If they don’t know the missile’s range, the whole country goes on alert.

      32. equinoxio21 Avatar

Probably do. My – expensive – solution has been to buy a new Mac, with huge memory space. 🙄
So you are in Lviv. That’s “Lvov”, right?
        Do be careful.
I think about King Lear more often:
“When bawds and whores do churches build…”
“Then shall the realm of Albion come to great confusion…”
But Albion has extended… It’s a bigger and bigger part of the world everyday…
        Do stay safe please…

      33. Image Earth Travel Avatar

In addition to the expense, the problem with MACs is that you’re tied just to MAC pretty much.
Yes, and it’s a beautiful city! I wasn’t expecting such fabulous architecture. I’m not sure what I was expecting. But, also so much music in the streets. Buskers dotted in parks and squares.
Very profound, Brian. Albion has indeed extended but the people of the world still have a choice and the choice should also include self-education to try and sift through the lies and find out the truth.

Strangely, there’s a suburb named Albion not far from Brisbane city.
        Of course. 🙂

      34. equinoxio21 Avatar

I’m fine with a full Apple range. For instance, I can’t use an Android phone. Logic is too different.
        Stay safe.

      35. Image Earth Travel Avatar

I keep switching between both every 4 or 5 years. It takes a little getting used to initially each time but get there eventually. 😉

      36. equinoxio21 Avatar

I know. I understand Android users have a hard time with I-phones. I’m just not in the mood to switch systems. LOL.
(Just saw the camo netting post on volunteerUkraine. Amazing. 👏🏻)

      37. Image Earth Travel Avatar

I’m comfortable using both but I’m on Android right now. I’ve seen photos taken with the iPhone 15 Pro and they’re pretty schmick – may need to change over…again.
Yes, we’re off to do that now.

      38. equinoxio21 Avatar

Schmick? Good? The only Android I ever had, a while back was not great. I’ve just upgraded to Iphone 12… (I know, I know… I never upgrade to the latest model. A bit close-fisted on that. I like it. Has a good, practical wide angle. Zoom seems to be better. Cheers.

      39. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Yes. I’m sure everyone has had loads of mobile devices over the years and since their inception. Each has its pesky quirks. I commented on the iPhone 15 Pro, I didn’t say I’d be buying one…yet. 😉
From your experience, the iPhone 12 sounds pretty good.

      40. equinoxio21 Avatar

Haha. I assumed as much. I didn’t even check the price. Way too expensive probably for my taste. 12 is working good so far.

      41. Image Earth Travel Avatar

It’s a horrendous price as a friend just bought one.

      42. equinoxio21 Avatar

        Let’s wait.

      43. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Agree. Never buy anything when it’s just out on the market. 😉

      44. equinoxio21 Avatar

        Yep.

  4. equinoxio21 Avatar

One of my favourite stations. I commuted there for a few weeks from upstate New York, looking for a job in NY.
    Great shot

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

One of my favourite stations as well, the ‘ole lady is charming and thank you for the feedback!

    Diego

    Amazing! 🙂

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Thank you, Diego. Do you like monochrome/B&W photography?

      1. Diego Avatar
        Diego

        Indeed I do 🙂

      2. Image Earth Travel Avatar

        Excellent – it’s my favourite medium. 😉

  6. Dave Ply Avatar

I suspect that may be one of the more photographed spots on the planet. I’ve never been to NY, unless you count layovers at the airport. (I don’t. I imagine if there was such a thing as limbo, it’d be much like being stuck in an airport for a long layover.)

You know I like B/W (or monochrome. B/W is easier to spell 😉 )

I am struck that with as many places in the world you’ve been, you only have 8 posts tagged USA, and most of them are about buying a sailboat. Methinks you’ve been missing out…

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

I’m sure you’re right, Dave. Ha, ha, layovers are fun, aren’t they?

Definitely think I’m missing out but there’s still time. Also, you know I travel long-term and on the falling Aussie dollar, the US might be a little expensive right now. But, we have been talking about popping over on this trip and before heading back to Oz in 2025. Never say never. 😉
Oh, and I had to salvage your comment from my Trash folder. It looks as though WP is up to its pesky tricks again!

      1. Dave Ply Avatar

Guess I need to work on my trashy comments…

      2. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Ha, ha, WP can be a pain at times and it’s so random.

  7. gillmorris Avatar

Fab shot of a fab station, I have stood in that very terminal building 🙂 but it does look more dramatic in monochrome x

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Thank you, Gill and I totally agree with you, although I’m a little biased as it’s my preferred medium. x

  8. Suzanne Avatar

Atmospheric shot, Nilla. I’ve fond memories of wandering around there.

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Thank you, Suzanne. I never tire of visiting Grand Central.
Hope all is going OK in NZ?

      1. Suzanne Avatar

Yes, pretty good. Getting into playing basketball, spin, pilates etc and thinking of getting into dragonboating this summer. So, keeping busy and the negative is my poor Mum has not to be placed into the hospital wing of the resthome due to advanced Parkinsons. Not a happy camper 🙁

      2. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Wow, you must be so fit!
I remember reading in one of your posts about the dragon boating. I’m sure you have really good strength in your upper body to do that type of boating. Sailing next? 😉
Sorry to hear about your mother and hope you’re OK under the circumstances.

    Great picture.

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

      Thank you, Margaret!

  10. Yetismith Avatar

For many subjects monochrome is more effective. Grand Central is one of them. Many portraits are better in b & w too, I think.

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

Grand Central is a gorgeous old lady and monochrome/B&W is the best medium, but then again, it’s my favourite medium.

  11. ourcrossings Avatar

Wow, that’s a brilliant capture. Not only is Grand Central Terminal one of the world’s most beautiful train stations, but it’s also one of New York’s most fascinating landmarks. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

      Hi Aiva
Thank you for the great feedback. Grand Central is timeless and the shafts of sunlight through the windows are gorgeous. This photo doesn’t show the sunlight as it was late in the afternoon. 😉
      Cheers
      Nilla

  12. Toonsarah Avatar

Great shot! I prefer to use the term ‘black and white’ as I maintain that a monochrome shot can be colour (e.g. all green, all red) 😀

    1. Image Earth Travel Avatar

      Thanks! I totally agree with you… 😉
