Monochrome Monday: Machu Picchu

The Monochrome Monday #momo challenge continues with the iconic and mystical Machu Picchu.

While exploring South America for over 9 months back in 2011, we completed the 5-day Salkantay trek, finally arriving at Peru’s iconic and mesmerising Machu Picchu.

    The Inca Trail was a spiritual trek for me. Seeing the photo brought back a lot of memories. Thank you.

        I did the 4 day trek to Machu Picchu about 20 years ago. It changed my life…

        Wow, it would have been totally different 20 years ago as I’m sure all of the available treks are different since I did the Salkantay in 2011.
        I read and hear the treks are even more popular now.

        I’m glad I was able to see the ruins. We did Huayna Picchu also when we got to Machu Picchu. That had an amazing view

        Me too! I didn’t venture up to Huayna Picchu as just wanted to spend the entire days wandering all over Machu Picchu – we were the last ones out when they shut the gates.

        Where in Ukraine are your relatives?
        Lviv is a little quieter than the east, but there’s still a midnight to 5 am curfew, air raid sirens go off every second day, lots of soldiers in the city, but life still goes on.

      Great! The plugin developer’s instructions and then my disabling the options found the culprit. Now I have to enable the options that didn’t make a difference – it’s never-ending!

    You are a truly intrepid woman! Altitude, hiking all very well but freezing as well? Going to Tibet we crossed the border from Nepal and there had been landslides, so to access the Chinese bus we had to climb up a very, very steep slope, but our baggage was loaded onto the backs of sherpas who shined up it like mountain goats. At the top we were obliged to sleep one night in a dormitory which had wide open windows. I think the temps were in the 20’s F, so we put on extra clothes and used the smelly quilts that were on our platforms. It wasn’t the Ritz, but it was fine and we all got the giggles because there was a hanging light bulb with no switch. I think one of the intrepid Swiss covered with a hat. But that was easy. It makes a huge difference who you are with, of course. In my case it was just being in Tibet that made no discomfort a problem.
    Always wanted to see Machu Picchu. Hard to imagine building that place in such a harsh environment. But people then were obviously tough. I feel that humanity is turning itself into blobs of jelly. So I am always thrilled to see young people exerting themselves.
    Black and white a very effective medium there!

      Agree that it’s the person or people you travel with that make the journey but the personalities along the way of other travellers make for great stories.
      The more you give me snippets of your Tibetan memories, the more it makes me want to travel through this incredible region. Maybe one day I’ll get there…after seeing Mongolia. I can’t remember how long you were in Tibet and was it long enough?
      Machu Picchu was built over 600 years ago and when you make it up there, you wonder how this incredible feat could have been done, especially at such an altitude.

    the magic, which I never knew how to explain, just feel, of Machu Picchu in b&w is also magical. I was at the Inca ruins in 1985 and I consider my trip to be more fascinating and internalized. magnificent, Nilla. my affectionate hug.

      Machu Picchu is such an incredibly mystical site but also unfathomable how this city was built over 600 years ago. It’s a site where B&W adds much to the site’s mood…hugs. 🙂
